A Community-Powered Success: Bayview Shuttle Extended Through 2027

A Community-Powered Success: Bayview Shuttle Extended Through 2027
By Javaun Garcia

Riders enjoy a community tour of San Francisco’s African American Arts & Cultural District. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has extended the Bayview Shuttle’s grant. The service is fully funded by this grant, and the extension runs through November 2027. This allows us to continue connecting people in Bayview-Hunter's Point to Muni, BART and other important resources. This helps them get around more easily, and it strengthens the public transportation network in a community that was historically disconnected from the rest of the city. The extension is a direct result of strong...

SFMTA Board of Directors Approves New Budget

SFMTA Board of Directors Approves New Budget
By Caroline Cabral

Our newly approved budget will help us continue to deliver the services San Franciscans depend on. Last week, our Board of Directors approved our next two-year budget. The budget is balanced and preserves crucial services. It prioritizes fast, safe and reliable Muni service. It maintains paratransit service. And it preserves free and discounted Muni fares for youth, seniors and people with disabilities. The directors approved an operating budget of $1.5 billion in FY26-27 and $1.6 billion in FY27-28. And they approved a capital budget of $655 million in FY26-27 and $546 million in FY27-28. Our...

120 Years Later: The 1906 Earthquake in 13 Photos

120 Years Later: The 1906 Earthquake in 13 Photos
By Jeremy Menzies

On April 18, 1906, the ground under San Francisco shook violently. A 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit at 5:12 a.m. as residents slept. The Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fires nearly destroyed the city. More than half the residents were displaced from their homes. And the transit system was devastated. In 1906, United Railroads of San Francisco ran most of the city’s transit lines. Company photographer John Henry Mentz documented the tragedy in a series of photographs. He took 14 photos on the day of the quake. And 13 of them have been preserved in the SFMTA Photo Archive collections. For the...

Working with Communities to Make Schools Safer: This Year’s Walk Audits

Working with Communities to Make Schools Safer: This Year’s Walk Audits
By Nehama Rogozen

School staff, parents, community members and SFMTA staff gather at Alvarado Elementary School to conduct a Walk Audit. Getting kids to school safely is a top priority for our teams at the SFMTA. One way we create safer conditions is through our School Walk Audit Program. Each year, we select 10 schools for this program. So, what is a school walk audit? It's just like it sounds. SFMTA staff join school and community representatives to walk the area and look for things that make it harder to walk to school safely. That could be: Faded striping on the roads Tricky crossings Blind spots People...

Super Bowl LX Week in SF: Transportation Goes the Distance
By Michael Roccaforte

The week of Super Bowl LX brought an estimated 1.3 million visitors to San Francisco. With so much activity, it took a team effort by the SFMTA to make sure people could get around town and enjoy themselves. We want to take a moment to thank our staff and highlight their work. Their efforts made exploring our city a great experience for everyone. Creating the game plan for smooth travel San Francisco was host to a number of special events across town. This required some streets to be closed to welcome crowds of visitors. SFMTA staff created the game plan and issued 20 event permits and a Muni...

First, we’ll be making several changes to bus stops and routes to: Improve reliability Provide better connections to regional transit Avoid delays And to improve Muni for years to come, we are working to replace Potrero Yard with a modern bus maintenance facility through the Potrero Yard Modernization Project. For crews to prepare for future construction, we need to close Potrero Yard in February 2026. We’ll move existing bus operations and...

Listening to your concerns Our Traffic Calming Program is resident driven. When neighbors tell us they're worried about speeding on their block, we listen. We collect data to confirm there's a speeding problem, and then we take action. That’s how each of these 141 upgrades got started...

Celebrating 100 Years on the M Ocean View!

Celebrating 100 Years on the M Ocean View!
By Jeremy Menzies

The M Ocean View Line turned 100 years old on October 6! To celebrate this centennial, we are kicking off a two-part blog series on the M. Explore this 100-year history in part one. An M Line streetcar heads down West Portal Avenue in this September, 1972 photo. Before the M The area surrounding the M Ocean View was largely undeveloped farmland until well into the 20th century. Since the 1860s, passenger trains to and from San Jose stopped nearby but service was infrequent and slow. In the early 1900s, electric streetcar lines skirted today’s Oceanview on San Jose Avenue and Ocean Avenue. This...
