Improving the Green Trips You Take on Muni: 29 Sunset Riders Seeing a Smoother Ride

Improving the Green Trips You Take on Muni: 29 Sunset Riders Seeing a Smoother Ride
By Brian Haagsman

New stops on the 29 Sunset now have enough space for its many student riders to get on and off comfortably. During San Francisco Climate Week – and every day – riding Muni is one of the most sustainable ways to get around. In San Francisco, transportation remains the leading source of greenhouse gas emissions: 44% of city emissions. Public transit only accounts for 2% of city emissions (see SFMTA Climate Roadmap). That’s despite carrying half a million riders every day on Muni - and more on BART, ferries and other bus services in the city. We’re proud to play a significant role reducing...

Riding the Rails: San Francisco Cable Car Stamps
By Kelley Trahan

Evening shot of a cable car on Powell Street with passengers, February 29, 1968 San Francisco's iconic cable cars aren't just a beloved tourist attraction. They are a symbol of the city's unique history and ingenuity. And they’ve appeared on two United States postage stamps. Let's take a journey through the history of these tributes and see how they came to be. The first ride: the 1971 cable car stamp The first cable car stamp was released in 1971. It was an 8-cent historic preservation stamp honoring the San Francisco cable cars. It showed the cable car's charm and was a small tribute to the...

The standard requires an operator to drive at least 1,952 hours without any preventable incidents or collisions during the fiscal year (July – June). We are honoring 189 operators at this year’s luncheon on March 1. Among the awardees: Almost 20...

Making Enforcement Fair: Our New Plan for the State Daylighting Law

Making Enforcement Fair: Our New Plan for the State Daylighting Law
By Rebecca Ashton-Dziedzan

The new state "daylighting" law will help make intersections safer. We're announcing a new plan to implement California's "daylighting" traffic safety law in San Francisco. The state law bans parking within 20 feet of the approach side of a crosswalk. This rule helps improve visibility at intersections for both people walking and driving. The law applies to both marked and unmarked crosswalks. Our goal is to make this change fair and easy to follow. We also want to ensure San Francisco’s streets are safer for everyone. Our new plan is clear, fast and fair: No citations will be issued at...
